0xDivas and Decentralized PFPs
Decentralized PFP projects are not bound by commercialization intent or other limitations that would restrict their potential. They are created and maintained by a community of altruistic individuals whose only aim is to improve the project for everyone’s benefit. This allows rapid innovation and evolution as ideas can be quickly tested and implemented without lengthy decision-making processes.
One of the most appealing aspects of decentralized projects is that they are not beholden to any single entity. This means that no one person or group can be detrimental to the project. Instead, the community can self-govern and ensure that the project evolves.
When we look at the journey of the Cryptopunks, we can see an iconic project that lived before, during, and outside of the rush to commercialization that has consumed the NFT world in the years since its launch. Without a centralized brand, the Cryptopunks became synonymous with blockchain innovation, hacker mentality, and digital assets; and because they remained free of direct commercial ties, they became flexibly representative of any imaginable identity.
When we look at the current state of NFTs, it’s clear that many projects are still in their infancy. The technologies, platforms, and communities are still evolving, and there is much room for growth. We believe that the PFP model loses its value as a representational tool when a centralized team focuses on applying identity to the project through branding and marketing. Instead, we believe that the PFP model can be used to create more powerful representational tools by remaining true to its decentralized roots.
The tabula rasa of the Cryptopunks was limited by the gender-based representation that has primarily favored a male interpretation; 0xDivas has been imagined as a fully decentralized PFP, where the artist behind the project becomes simply the curator, and the community can imprint their own identities as women in Ethereum and take full ownership of who they are.
